The public response to “the worst mountaineering accident in America’s history” predictably focused on what – or who – was to blame. After all, seven died in ghoulish circumstances, in what some saw as an entirely preventable tragedy.
But in reality – despite their surly, inexperienced Mormon guide and lots of extremely questionable decisions – the mountain was always going to have the last word. This is the ShortHand on the 1967 Mount McKinley disaster.
