ShortHand: HIV’s “Patient Zero”

Starting in June 1981, the AIDS epidemic ravaged communities all over the world. Since then, the retrovirus has taken 36.3 million lives, and there are reported to have been as many as 100 million confirmed cases the world over.

This is the story of how that poisonous narrative – wrongly blaming one Air Canada flight attendant for a deadly epidemic – became a part of the zeitgeist.
