ShortHand: Who Bombed The Vatican?
LISTEN TO THE EPISODE HERE
On the 5th of November 1943, a small, unmarked plane dropped five bombs on to the most Holy place on earth, the home of God’s mouthpiece on earth: the Vatican. It was the first time in history a bomb had been detonated in the holy city. The immediate fallout from the bombing was a PR disaster for both the Allied and Axis powers – nobody wanted to be responsible for starting a war with the Catholic Church.
But someone must have dropped the bombs, and they must have had their reasons. This is the Shorthand.
