ShortHand: The Human Zoo & Mbye Ota Benga

At the turn of the last century, Congolese teenager Mbye Ota Benga was branded a ‘savage’ and put on display at the St Louis World Fair, before being forced into a permanent exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. He was one of several exploited individuals that were paraded as the ‘missing link’ – in mockery of Darwin's theory of evolution.

This is the story of how a great leap forward in human understanding became yet another excuse for rampant racism in the USA.
